August 2011- Featured Artists

We are the featured Artists for August at the Juneau Artist Gallery located in beautiful downtown Juneau (Senate Building). Lincoln will be showing his new photography and we will have new glass wall tile designs and jewelry designs.
As always, we will be there to answer any questions and to talk about our work.
AND give you direction to our new studio and gallery space. Yes- we made the leap! It took us a few years to find a suitable location and to find the time to do it.

Our new studio is located in Lemon Creek across from the Alaskan Brewing Company. We should have a sign up soon and our goals is to have set business hours starting in August.

Artist lecture at the JAHC Jan. 25th

Well it's almost time to head out on all my glass adventures. Lincoln just left for Germany to take a lampworking class in Lauscha. I have one week before I head down to Pilchuck and then on to Canberra, Australia to take a class at the Canberra Glassworks.
In the mean time, things a busy here in Juneau, Alaska. New work is going out at the Juneau Artist Gallery and things a pumping along at the Canvas Community art Studio. Stop by and check things out.
I will be updating my posts during my travels. Check back in often over the next few months.

Canvas show Opening May 7th

Basement Studios is getting ready for a month long exhibit at the Canvas Community Studio and Gallery. The opening is May 7th (First Friday) It's a glass collective show. Five local S.E. Alaskan glass artists are featured. Lincoln has some new blown work, I will have some glass castings, cameo engraved panels and some blown work. It is turing out to be a "Must See" show. (I love it when people say that). Catch us at the opening 4:30- 7:ish or check out the work anytime throughout the month of May.

Time is flying.....

I am currently watching the kiln tonight waiting for a new cast glass piece to be done. It should be ready to pull out tomorrow night. (fingers crossed)

If all goes well, it will be included in our May show happening at the Canvas.

I have also been creating some super cool necklaces that will go down to the Juneau Artist Gallery in the next month or so.

And to wrap the month up- We will both be heading down to the Seattle area to blow some glass and see family.

2010 is approaching fast and we have so many things brewing in the basement. Lincoln and I both will be getting ready for our glass group show at the Canvas in May and we are looking at summer glass classes and traveling to some glass festivals. It's time to start plotting the years action plan!
Reminder: If you are in Juneau, it's not to late to stop by the Canvas and see the REACH students exhibit- paintings, fused glass, clay....loads of amazing work.

Lincoln is home from blowing glass at Pilchuck glass School . The tourist season is slowing down.

ALSO- I am teaching a glass and pottery class at the Canvas- starts this Thursday 6:30-8:30- Jewelry Fusion- should be fun.

I am home and busy in our studio and at my teaching job at the Canvas. I am thinking about doing some weekend days at the new Juneau Artists Market (JAM) at the JACC.

We are down to our last 2 days of class! It was so amazing to spend time with my mentor and to really focus on work in the cold shop! We are all drained and tired.

Below work I did with Martin Rosol.

The Studio provides a professional photographer at the end of the session. It's been a good day.

Now time to pack and get ready to head across the country.

There are only four working days left here at the Studio (Corning Glass Museum). It's been a productive trip and my brain is full.

Above is my starter block of optical glass laminated together with colored Hextal. The glass is all clear so the light transfers the color of the pigmented adhesive through the shape of the block.

Above is my teacher working on a piece. We are using diamond and stone wheels to remove glass and shape our objects.

Above is my piece after I took it to the saw! I need to get a picture of the final piece!

Above is the engraving lathe I have been using- I loved the saline drip bag for a water source! Very Funny!

Above is the first piece I worked on last week.......I need so much more paractice on the engraving lathe! Yikes!

Well my friends, I am saturated! I am at the Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) Rakow Research Library today. There are no words for how amazing this places is....
I am on day 3 of an engraving and coldworking class with Jiri Harcuba and Martin Rosol.

Pilchuck ended on Friday and I have been up on the farm hanging out with my mother -in-law.

The session went well and I feel like I got a lot done and learned hoards of new information.

Yikes- so much to do

Hey gang! well it's been super busy here- the past week we have cast several molds, pulled a few pieces out of the kilns and made several mistakes. Our teacher says that mistakes are a gift......well it must be my birthday because I keep getting a lot of gifts.
The weather has been fab so we have been working outside the studio everyday. This really is the good life. I even got a sunburn.Can't get that in Juneau.
This is my first cast piece- we all cast our hands. There is copper wire embedded in the palm.

Here is one of the TA's hand building a mold. Supper cool and messy!This is the studio building- we all have space to plot our next ideas and disasters! I mean gifts.

OK I am off to get ready for the student auction tonight. Which is really a dance party. The theme is "Pilchuck: Where the wild things are." I should have some great photos from that!

Hello Folks- well we got off to a fast start- I am here a Pilchuck glass school in Washington State taking a class on glass casting with Silvia Levenson.

The first night was fun and hopping but I was ready to get to work.

We started by casting our hands.then use the the wax hand for a open face mold

Here we are steaming the wax out of the final mold. Tomorrow we get it all ready to go in the kiln. I'm not sure if this all makes sense. I think I need to go to bed. Sorry.

On the Farm

Our Family has a farm in Washington. Over the past few years it has grown and many animals have taken up residency here. Some smell more than others but they are all neat to look at.

Lately I have been enjoying getting a good photo. I'm not too concerned with the composition of the photo but more about capturing the personality of the subject or subjects.

Turkeys are good models. They can work with the camera....

Chickens..well...

Chickens are always hiding something....they seem like they need to relax.
These ladies can work it. Bovine beauties. Work it girls.

Della Rose is super pregnant. She is going to have a cow baby any day now. I asked if I could drees the girls up a bit. A pink bow, earrings, a tasteful straw hat.... we shall see.

OK so tonight I am off to Pilchuck. The agenda for the night: Check in, classes meet, cocktails at the gallery, dinner in the lodge, school introductions & to top it off a "show" of sorts in the hot shop. Last year someone made a large clear vessel and popped some popcorn inside it! Very fun.

I made it to Bellingham and had a beautiful sunny day here yesterday! My friend and I walked around this hip little town and enjoyed the mass amounts of people out in the sun. They live good here.
Today I will be re-packing and doing some paper work for my pilchuck class.

Waiting for the vet...

Life is better when you have a good view. It's a beautiful day and we are waiting for the vet. The old dog turned 14 this year and he seems a bit wobbly. We are lucky here in Juneau to have vets that come to your home for dog inspections. The dogs love it, we love it- it's just a good idea.

After that: make some beads, cut some glass for carving blanks, finish some jewelry....oh yeah pack. It's the four day count down till I leave town.

We had a good time for our First Friday opening. It was a bit slow at first but soon people came by. The gang at the Ruby Room were such a big help and everything went smooth. I really liked the way the room ended up looking. I will get photos up soon.

NOW- I have a week and a 1/2 to get packed up for my classes at Pilchuck Glass School and Corning Glass Museum - back to back glass class fun. When I get home I bet my brain will be mush!
I hope to do a bit of blogging whilst I am away. Maybe even with photos! That would be fun. My friend Anji would be so proud of me if I were a good blogger girl on my adventures.

I have been carving for the last few weeks and the last few days have been a real push- Things are wrapping up. Above are some shots of a new piece in various stages- They are backwards- sorry- he is almost done in that top picture. The red lines are my cut markings.

I've been busy baby! Let me tell you. We have a show coming up May 1st and I am heading to Pilchuck Glass School and Corning Glass Museum for part of May and June! It will be a busy summer start!
I received a scholarship to study with Jiri Harcuba at the Corning Glass Museum (Corning, New York) and that means I will be able to attend the Glass Art Society Conference the weekend before. I learned so much from Jiri last summer, but I still have so many questions. Maybe even more now that I have been spending more time engraving glass. I guess that's life.

And Hello to Anji- please forgive me it's been a month or two since my last blog.

This is my Covington glass engraving/cutting lathe. I love it.

When Lincoln and I were in California this past December, we had an opportunity to visit the Covington Shop. They were so nice! We had a tour and I did some shopping- which is a big deal to us Alaskan people who buy everything on line. It is nice to see and touch things before you buy them.
I use diamond wheels of varying sizes and grits. This is how one carves in glass. The glass and wheels are water cooled, this keeps the glass from cracking.
The carving is of the pump house on Sandy Beach,which is a beach near our home. One of my favorite places in the world. My dogs and I go there almost everyday.
This piece sold to a friend. I am happy it will have a home.

what an Alaskan winter

Well our group show opened this Friday with a nice reception. We had 300 people show up on a super slippy slimy night in Juneau. The ladies at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center (JACC) were so helpful and kind. Nothing like the last few pushes to get the baby out!
The show has 4 different glass studios from Juneau and Little Port Walter. I think people will enjoy stopping by. Lincoln and I have a cool collaborative encaustic and recycled glass piece and my new glass carvings are up.
We are going to try to have the room open during the Wearable Arts show on the 14-15th and maybe for the Ktoo disco party on Friday the 13th. We shall see.
Now....lets see taxes, prepping for summer and our next show in May at the Ruby Room!

OK now it's way too cold

It seems like it has been 12 degrees for a very long time. The dogs and I took about a 10 minute walk - and that was it! Time to dig out the thermal undies!

Lincoln and I are back from sunny California . We had an amazing time. So much to do! It was great to spend time with all our family there.
We spent two days at Disneyland and all Lincoln got was this funky mustache! All I got was a cold!

I'll post pictures soon of the class class we took down in Ojai. Some cool new ideas!
